Playgrounds are one of the easiest screen-free “yeses”… until you’re tired, distracted, or trying to answer one quick message that turns into 20 minutes.
Instead of aiming for full-time engagement, try 5-minute presence sprints.

The 5-minute presence sprint

Set a mental timer:
  • Watch your kid for 5 minutes.
  • Notice: what they’re trying, what they repeat, and what they seem proud of.
  • Give one specific comment (not just “good job”).

“Say this” scripts at the playground

  • “I saw you try that twice before you got it.”
  • “Do you want me to watch, or do you want help?”
  • “Show me your favorite part of the playground.”
  • “That looked brave.”

Age tweaks (so it works for everyone)

  • 0–3: Stay close, narrate (“You’re climbing. You’re holding tight.”) and name feelings.
  • 4–6: Play “I spy” or do short fun challenges (“Show me your best jump!”).
  • 7–12: Ask about strategy (“What’s your plan to get across?”) or let them teach you a game.

Quick screen-free outdoor ideas (no prep)

  • Sidewalk chalk “obstacle course”
  • Nature scavenger hunt (find something smooth, something poky, something tiny)
  • “How many birds can we spot in 3 minutes?”

Screenshot Box: Outdoor presence checklist

  • 5 minutes: watch (no phone)
  • 1 specific comment: “I noticed…”
  • 1 choice: “Watch or help?”
  • 1 mini-game: scavenger hunt / I spy
