DIY Kaleidoscope Craft for Kids (Ages 6–12)
Difficulty: Medium
Description
This DIY kaleidoscope craft for kids uses a simple cardboard tube and reflective paper (or foil) to create colorful patterns.
It’s a fun, hands-on way to explore symmetry and light reflection at home, in a classroom, or as a screen-free weekend project.
Materials Needed (DIY Kaleidoscope Supplies)
- Cardboard tube (paper towel roll or wrapping paper tube cut down)
- Reflective paper or aluminum foil
- Clear plastic wrap
- Tape (clear tape works best)
- Beads, sequins, or other small colorful craft pieces
How to Make a DIY Kaleidoscope (Step-by-Step)
-
Add the reflective lining:
Cut reflective paper (or foil) to fit and line the inside of the cardboard tube. Smooth it down so the inside is as shiny as possible. -
Create the viewing window:
Cover one end of the tube tightly with plastic wrap and tape it in place. This will hold the pieces inside while still letting light through. -
Add the “sparkle” pieces:
Drop in a small handful of beads or sequins. Don’t overfill—fewer pieces usually makes clearer patterns. -
Seal and test:
Secure everything with tape, then look through the open end and slowly turn the tube to see the patterns change.
Educational Angle (STEM Learning)
This kaleidoscope activity helps kids learn how light reflects off shiny surfaces and how symmetry can create repeating shapes and patterns.
It’s an easy way to connect crafting with basic science and math concepts.
